Too old?

I’m 49 and thinking about switching into TEFL, but I keep wondering if I’ve left it a bit late. My background is in a completely different field, so this would be a big change for me. Part of me worries that schools might prefer younger teachers, but another part of me feels like my life and work experience should count for something. Has anyone here started teaching later in life?
